The Speechwriter supports leadership by crafting clear, compelling, and accurate communications that translate complex scientific research and policy initiatives into accessible narratives for diverse audiences. This role is responsible for developing senior-level speeches, remarks, talking points, testimony, and presentations that advance and reflect the voice, priorities, and standards of federal leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft high-quality speeches, remarks, talking points, messages, internal communications, congressional testimony, and presentations.
- Synthesize information from internal and external sources into accurate, engaging, and audience-appropriate narratives.
- Translate complex scientific and technical concepts into clear, plain-language messaging while preserving technical accuracy.
- Tailor messaging for varied audiences, including Congress, scientific and professional associations, academic institutions, federal partners.
- Develop strategic communications plans, engagement strategies, and messaging frameworks to support initiatives, programs, and research activities.
- Collaborate with subject-matter experts, program officials, and communications staff to gather information, conduct interviews, and ensure factual accuracy.
- Edit and revise materials to align with the established voice, tone, and style of leadership and federal communications standards.
- Ensure all written products meet quality, clarity, and timeliness expectations in fast-paced, high-visibility environments.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of professional speechwriting experience for varied audiences and purposes.
- At least 3 years of speechwriting experience supporting science-focused, research, or technical organizations.
- Demonstrated experience researching, fact-checking, and validating content through interviews with subject-matter experts and program officials.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
- Proven ability to tailor messaging to senior leadership and high-level audiences, including congressional and executive stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments under tight deadlines.
- Experience working in or supporting federal agencies or large, mission-driven organizations is highly preferred.
- Submission of two relevant writing samples is required
